SPIRITUAL TEACHING
The Buddha told a parable. A young tradesman came home to see that his house was robbed and burned to the ground. Right outside a charred body was left. The man was sure this was his little boy. He cried, beat his chest, and pulled out his hair in grief. Then, he began a cremation rite.
The little body had been the delight of the father’s life. He so longed for his son, that rather than abandon the ashes for one moment, the dad made a velvet bag and put the ashes in it. He carried the bag with him at all times.
One night he heard a knock on the door, at 2 o’clock AM. The father had been weeping, while clutching the bag of ashes close to his body. Interrupted by the knocking, he called out, “Who is there?” “It’s me, your son!,” came the reply. “You mean person,” retorted the man, “you are not my boy! He died three months ago. I have his ashes with me right now.” The person continued to knock on the door, crying out and begging to be let in. The man refused, and the knocks ceased, as the person walked away, never to return again.
The one at the door was the little boy, the man’s beloved child. The robbers had taken him captive. He had escaped, excited to return home to his beloved father.
Often we do not see the obvious, for we are convinced of our notions of the obvious. Meditation and Contemplative Prayer helps us to have insight into Reality, not merely ideas of Reality. Insight means "to see within" or "in-seeing." This goes beyond appearances to the Truth that cannot be defined, but can be deeply felt as True and Real.
